Last Saturday, the Director of the National Museum of Watercolor notified me with kind words but no less surprising, that this work was censored by those in charge of the museum and that it was banned from display at the exhibition “Large Size” organized by IWS Switzerland, in which I am one of the special guests. They consider that the subject is inappropriate for an exhibition of watercolor and of course, for that museum. I find this very hard to take, emotionally devastating, and actually had not occurred in 32 years of exposing in galleries and museums around the world, with the most diverse subjects. This startling decision denies the effort that thousands of people have made since Benito Juarez to stimulate critical and liberal minds in this country. Even knowing that Mexico has prided itself on being a serene shelter and a backwater for intellectuals, artists, religious and political refugees throughout the world, as well as the communists and atheists of the Spanish Civil War —Fidel Castro or Gabriel Garcia Marquez, etc. There are hundreds of anticlerical artists that have existed in Mexico even before the Mexican Revolution and Muralist Movement. Here, feathers as remarkable as those of Carlos Fuentes or Fernando Vallejo have written golden pages against church and in favour of freedom of thought; however, it seems that there are still those who don’t know that Inquisition finished two centuries ago, and want to impose their nasty ideas and questionable criterion, by exercising a little power. It is important to note that the IWS Switzerland’s invitation had no restrictions on the subject, and that the museum is not related with the event planner since even they rented the space to the event planning. It only demonstrates directive’s arbitrariness. Nevertheless I respect any opinion about my works, and I’ll ship a new painting to comply my friends and colleagues from the IWS. But no one will find bucolic landscapes, backwaters, portraits of happy children or images of beautiful flowers, specially chaste eyes of those who have made from watercolor the most banal art technique and have moved it away from the circuits of Contemporary Art. I clarify to these suffering souls, friends of censorship, that the work “After” it’s not the personification of a real pope, but a caricature of myself. I did not assault any bishop to steal his cassock as it is merely a disguise. Women who appear are models that gently posed and their honor only were sullied by the dirt of the observers minds. Thanks for inviting me to the event you preside, Silvia, and your resolute defense of my work. I still believe that watercolor —as any technique in an artist hand— must be at the service of ideas, and not at the service of onanistic docile complacency of its playful effects. To forbid this work in a Coyoacan museum does not silence me, and does not wipe out thousands of crimes perpetrated by clergy; does not solve inmoral concealment, or palpable obstruction of justice.” NO HATE NO DISCRIMINATION ONLY LOVE AND PEACE
